video evaluation
1.
I chose to focus on games development as my focus as the college doesn't have much advertising on the website. With this now becoming a fast growing , i believe that students and parents should be made aware of the industry and the jobs it has to offer. My primary target audience is students as they are the ones who are going to be taking the course. The secondary primary audience is the careers so they are also aware of the benefits that the student would get from enrolling onto the course.
Withinthe video the main focus of the visual shots was the students. I did this because this gives the main idea of what it would be like to be on the course. It shows the different interactions the students have with each other and the teacher. The choice to show the benefits of the course through teacher voiceover was to help both target audiences to have a better understanding of the course.
2.
a. mise en scene
The mise en scene used within my video is good as included the course content of the games development course and included the backgrounds of each classroom. This is effective as the viewer can visually see some of the things that either them or the student would do when they are enrolled onto the course. for example the vr is helped to make certain types of games as well as designing certain items for games if it is necessary.
This can be improved however as there are other things that could have been added in terms of the equipment that can be used within the course.
b. camerawork
My camera work was good in some places with the pans and sliding shots as these worked well in some places. This helped show a wide range of the classrooms and the student work. I chose to use a lot of moving shots within the video to keep it following within using static shots. The idea is to draw the viewer in and keep them interested in watching so a lot of the moving shots show more of the environment and would keep their eye in the video and the different shots. The static shots by them =self would keep the interest of the viewer much as there wouldn't be much happening. The focus was on the screens as each screen showed a different aspect of the course and it also shows the theory and practical side of the course. This is a great way of covering the course within the amount of time the video could show. i slowed them down in places to give it a stop/start feeling because it allowed a focal point in the shots to be established mainly the work so the viewer can see the stuff they would be studying. I used different angles when I didn't have my slider shots as this would help space out the video and it means the that use of levels and different angles engages the viewer more as too similar shots can make the video boring. A lot of my shot distances where medium shots to medium close. This is because the main focus point of each shot was quite central in each shot and this stayed the same throughout each shot. I did also use a wide shot for some of the classroom shots as i wanted to showcase of the learning environments that the students would be working in.
However, some of the sliding shots were shaky and this caused the shots to look slightly of. this could have been improved with the help of others and getting more used to the slider. these could have also been more creative shots as the amount of sliders harm the video and less of them would have been more effective.
c. editing and use of post production effects.
The use of editing was a main reason a lot of my clips were able to fit into the time frame of the video and this also allowed me to add a flare lens to one of the shows to make it more unique than the rest. the use of fades was to make it a smoother transition between each sliding shots. I tried using other things like a cross dissolve to help transition to each shot but the most effective transition that i could use that fit with the style of the video was the fade as it allowed the video flow better. I used a cross dissolve when the video needed go from one room to another as i felt that this fit better and added a different type of transition to the video. I also used a fade up at the beginning to help complement the first shot i used which was a fast zoom into the window of a classroom. I used the fade out at the end of the video so the video would end on the teachers final words which were helping to encourage the students to come to East Norfolk to study games.
I could have messed around with more effects to give the video a more unique look as the only things i used was a lens flare and used the speed duration of the clips so there was a lack of variety of effects. The editing could have made these shots more unique as a lot of the shots are like this
d. sound
In terms of sound to the video, i had high quality sound so the interviews i recorded using a tascam and a portable studio, muffed any background noise meaning the words they used to describe the course were clear for both students and careers of the students. they could hear about what the course entails and what they could expect from when they finish the course. The music i used fit well as it was a video game theme song so that complimented the content of the video. I got the music from a site called imcompetech which allows people to use the music from there as long as they credit the source. This allowed me to find a video game inspired music and add it to the video.
However, there was a piece of unnecessary audio of me asking the question to a teacher at the end and the quality of audio drops and is out of place compared to the rest of the sound used. i could have also included the audio of some students describing the experiences they have had on the course and this would have been more effective as this means the the students could relate more.
e. Graphics
My graphics within the video are simplistic but effective as they display the names of the teachers on the lower third with a grey background. however the starting graphic doesn't fit the theme of the video and i could have added more creative effects for each lower third making them stand out more as they were all the same background and font. The change in graphics would have slightly improved the video.
